Tinnitus Wiki – Tinnitus and the Inner Ear
This article assumes that you already know something about tinnitus, at least that it is ear ringing or some other unwanted ear noise that has no external stimulus or source of sound, and that you would like to know something about how our hearing works to get a better understanding of tinnitus, what causes it, and what can be done to stop ringing ears. Thе fоcus оf thіs artіclе іs thе іnnеr еar and tіnnіtus. Twо оthеr artіclеs dеal wіth tіnnіtus and thе оutеr еar and thе mіddlе еar, and thеy may bе fоund undеr my authоr namе. I have minnears so I get it— Don’t take tylenol – it makes it worse.
And remember – you hear the fridge running always – yet that noise doesn’t make you crazy.
Other people have it too. William Shatner has it.
If it gets too bad and you’re afraid you’ll hurt yourself ( Wm Shatner’s friend killed himself over the constant ringing) go to the Dr and get Paxil or something like it. Good luck.
My GP prescribed Amitriptyline for my tinnitus but an Audiologist I saw told me they don’t recommend drugs?
Who’s right, the GP or the Audiologist? The Audiologist did some tests etc etc and then said my hearing is below normal or below where it should be (personally I think I hear just fine?) What? PERSONALLY I THINK I HEAR JUST FINE. He mentioned something about slight deafness or something or maybe I was dreaming? Anyway, Amitriptyline is an anti-depressant that has “off label” uses for tinnitus, that’s why it was prescribed for me, should I continue taking it or not I wonder? Two professionals giving me two different opinions…..The Audiologist said he thinks the non-stop tinnitus I have is caused by the slight hearing loss. I don’t see the link but he’s the expert, I guess.
Oh yeah, and my dentist told me a few months I have suspeected TMJD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TMJD and that’s what is probably causing the tinnitus! Been referred to a maxillofacial specialist about that. Had an MRI scan a couple of days ago in relation to the inner ear to see what might be going on, at the request of the Audiologist and an ENT specialist. Thanks.

I get my 5 a day: ventolin, symbicort, singulair, nexium, amitriptyline. Any possible effects from such a meds mix?
Ventolin, Symbicort and Singulair are all asthma meds which I take daily (developed adult onset asthma ten years ago)
Ventolin (Salbutamol) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salbutamol
Symbicort (Budesonide/formoterol) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbicort
Singulair (Montelukast) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singulair
Nexium I’ve only been taking for about 2 weeks, prescribed by an ENT specialist for a stomach issue, acid reflux or something, not quite sure actually.
Nexium (Esomeprazole) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexium
Amitriptyline is an anti-depressant but that’s not why I’m taking it, I suffer from non-stop tinnitus and it has unapproved “off label” uses to try and deal with tinnitus or reduce it or something – not sure if it really works however, maybe, very slightly.
Amitrityline http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amitriptyline
Can any one or more of these medications interfere with another? I now only take Nexium and Amitriptyline before sleep as I find they knock you the hell out and make you very tired if you take them while awake. Thanks.
Can Ginkgo Biloba help reduce or perhaps eliminate tinnitus – what other vitamins/supplements “might” help?
I have tinnitus 24/7, non stop – been like that for probably about 6 months or so. Sometimes it’s worse than other times, the quieter it is the more I notice it but nonetheless it’s always there. Not very good really. My doc has said there are no pharmaceuticals available to deal with tinnitus (which I’m not sure whether that’s quite true?) So thinking about an alternative approach.
I have been told I have something called TMJ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporomandibular_joint_disorder which could be causing the tinnitus. But another dentist told me I may have something else, possibly (just possibly!) Neuralgia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuralgia Thanks.
I’m already on Ponstan (Ponstal in the US) and Amitriptyline (originally an anti-depressant but also has off label uses to deal with neurological pain) Thanks.
Actually my doc didn’t say there weren’t pharmaceuticals available to deal with tinnitus but that there was no cure for tinnitus – my mistake. Amitriptyline is “supposed” to help reduce tinnitus and also help neurological pain, I think. Only been taking it for 2 weeks so haven’t noticed any effect – possibly never will in any case. Thanks.
Just found out that Hitler had tinnitus, so too has Rush Limbaugh and Gary Glitter but then so has Steve Martin and Barbara Streisand, lol….
Mussorsky.
My music teacher at middle school (in USA, this would be equivalent to 5th or 6th grade, 9-13 year old) used to tell us stories of the classical composers, and the story of the ‘big five’, particularly Mussorsky always stuck in my mind.
Here it is, as it was told to me:
He was taught piano from his mother at a young age, and although he showed skill, he was a lazy student.
As he got older, he joined the army and at the age of 21, someone gave him a bottle of Vodka for his birthday.
This lead to his downfall, as he became an alcoholic and eventually, after years of alcoholism, died in extreme poverty, after been neglected by friends, family and work collegues.
He never married, moreover, he never had a girlfriend and died at a young age.
This picture portrait was drawn a few week before his death and shows in his face, the effects of alcoholism:
http://01varvara.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/ilya-repin-portrait-of-the-composer-modest-mussorgsky-1881.jpg
His music was, after a few decades, orchestrated by Ravel.
My details may be wrong, as this story was told to me back in 1983 and i have not looked into the matter since, but it certainly was a tragic life story.
There is no “cure” for tinnitus. The reason is that tinnitus is caused by hearing loss and the hearing loss that causes it is generally permanent (either from aging, noise, etc.). The brain can learn to ignore the tinnitus though, but that takes some work on your part to reduce your stress (like meditation) and sound therapy to help the brain not hear the ringing. Currently the best treatment for tinnitus is sound based therapies. The only web-based one, that is research based and personalized, is at beyondtinnitus.com.
This company’s system is based on research of two ear nose and throat doctors done at the University of California Irvine.
Basically, they figure out your tinnitus pitch and loudness, etc. and give you a sound file that you can download for therapy that is specific to your tinnitus. The therapy sound can be mixed with your own music using their system and you can listen to your own music while the sound therapy file is working in the background.
The alternative is therapy in the clinic with tinnitus retraining therapy or Neuromonics, but those will cost you ~$5000.
Herbal remedies have not been shown to be effective in good clinical studies. Sound therapies have are effective 80-90% of time, whereas herbal remedies have only been found to be as effective as sugar pills. Ginkgo has been studied in large clinical trials and it wasn’t found to be effective at all. My dad had bothersome tinnitus and he took Ginkgo and it didn’t help. He tried the sound therapy and he can’t hear the ringing. If he really thinks about it and listens for it, he hears it, but otherwise it’s not noticeable and doesn’t keep him up at night.

Do what you think is best, but I would probably want to see an ENT for this rather than an audiologist and a GP and a dentist before doing anything else. Amitriptyline has a lot of possible side effects.

Is there anything i can do about my tinnitus?

Catastrophes for composers- which turned out fortunate for us, and which were real tragedies?
I was just thinking about Schumann and how he destroyed the tendons in his hands. As much as I feel bad for him, it did push him full-time into composition; for us, at least, it was fortunate…
Beethoven came to terms with his deafness, but I can hardly think of a worse fate for a composer than what happened to Smetana. He went deaf *and* got tinnitus- he constantly had the same high note playing in his head, day in day out. It’s hard to think of any way that isn’t a curse! Though in the last movement of Ma Vlast, the violin E that keeps showing up is supposed to represent the tinnitus.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smetana
What composer “tragedies” can you think of, and did any of them turn out to be blessings in disguise?
My right ear is ringing and plugged. Wtf…I don't like it.
Well, I did just now. Awesome, I really liked it.
NOW, I'm going to have to go to the book store a pick one up..
Sounds very interesting.
Blessings to you !!!

the last one was the funniest and racist.
Were you working with loud equipment in the day or two before it started making the noise? If so, you might have damaged your ear, and have ringing and hearing loss because of it. If it does not go away within the next few days, I would advise going to a doctor to get it checked out.
I think it's an excellent start; however, the lengthy description of her friends and her ring slowed the pace of the story. Other than that I think you hit the ground running with your characters and the exposition. Keep up the good work!

this is so good and moving:
" bag towards me. "open it" she ordered. Malakhi was still over the moon for making me believe Britnee had really left him alone. "How long are you going to keep us waiting- open it!" she said in a rush tone. I took the wrapping off with excitement. It was a ring. "A ring? I asked her, and looked up to meet her eye"
Though I loved it, the story continually grows and fits with the way the others have written, but I was slightly disappointed. I expected something more, I do not know exactly what but it was missing something, maybe the heavy emphasis on the "bad guy" Voldemort, who though was the main thread through all the books I was hoping it would explore other areas in more detail. This may just be an opinion from an adult reader, but all the same I still await the next instalment-is there a university for wizards! I need to apply
I just heard this one the other day. An alternative medicine Doc says to dissolve sea salt into warm water and drop into ear, leaving it for a minute. He swears that it will kill the infection… It's cheap and won't hurt you!! You might try taking allergy medicine as well… Something has to be causing it!

Whoa!! My ear just started ringing, then sounded like I plugged it, weird!
I think it's very sweet. The only criticism I have is you say "I pushed the ring up my index finger" but a engagement or wedding ring goes on your ring finger not index. just saying
My left ear is ringing. Any meaning? Weird.
Hearing aids create a dual benefit of enhancing hearing and masking or covering up the tinnitus.
