It is possible to find relief form TMJ/TMD. It usually requires treatment by a dentist. MR Imaging can be done to properly diagnose the cause and treatment can be initiated to relieve the dysfunction. It may require mouth splint (plastic mouth piece) therapy to calm things down, physical therapy relieve muscle tension, or even orthodontic treatment. among some types of treatment. Chiropractic is worth a look and can provide some relief.
The device you are referring to is probably C-PAP
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPAP
The person using it may have reported an increase or decrease in TMJ symptoms due to the occasional use of an intraoral mouthpiece that has been used.
Treatment can be complex. If you have had it for two years and as you have described the sign and symptoms correctly, I would recommend finding a dentist who specialized in treating orofacial pain. You will probably have the best luck if you are near a large city, but you might be surprised to find someone if you live in a small town.
Avoid things that can irritate the joint. Gum chewing is one of the worst.
    Best wishes,

Can a computer be loud enough to cause tinnitus?
I was reading a forum just now, and stumbled across a thread about tinnitus, and there said that computers can cause this. Is this true? I thought tinnitus was caused by prolonged exposure to loud noises. Computers do make noise, but the sound of computer fans is considered white noise, right? And surely isn’t loud enough to cause damage?
What do you think? I’m worried because my PC’s fans are kinda loud… bit it’s just a constant buzzing of fans, nothing more. It’s not a piercing sound or anything like that.

I have a static sound like crinkling paper in my left ear…?
It started happening about four years ago, and it’s been increasing in frequency ever since. When a noise gets loud like music, or when I’m listening to my headphones (at a low level – I don’t listen to my music loud) it will start sounding in my left ear.

Sometimes I will yawn and have to remove the ear bud in my left ear because I know the crinkling sound is coming. It hurts when this sound occurs, has a very dull pain where I assume the ear drum would be. And it will also occur when I’m listening to people talking or music without headphones, etc.

I really need to know what this is. I’ve researched it online and some forums say tinnitus, some say there’s a lack of ear wax, others may suggest it’s something to do with the e-tube or something of that sort. But I need to know what is causing this or it’s going to drive me nuts!!!

Do there exist any TMJ / TMJD CURES?
Anyone got over it? Like complete remission of all symptoms?

Mine started with cracking and clicking in right jaw for 2 years and tinnitus, stiff in the morning etc.

then I read on “ehow.com” (never go there) and was told some “selfhelp” to TMJ, and suddenly now my left jaw is feeling so weird, I can’t speak normally, it feels like all the muslces on my left face is fuckdup, it even looks that way from the outside.

I got muscle knots infront of right under the ears, I KNOW these are the cause.
But these muscle knots wont loosen up, warm water, massage, nothing :(

I read on a forum once about a guy who used this device calld c-gap c-cap g-gap g-cap or somthing, but I can’t remember the name and the forum is now closed.

anyone heard of any such thing ?

    problems with tinnitus?
ok so my question has three parts to it, the first two mainly aimed at people who have tinnitus

    1. for those who have tinnitus, do you find that it can often get louder and quieter for no apparent reason, or it gets higher and lower in pitch?

    2. for those who have tinnitus, how do you cope with it, ive only just got it, and its driving me insane haha

    3. im planning on buying ear plugs so that when i go out to gigs and such the loud music doesnt further damage my hearing, but ive read on a forum that this can actually worsen tinnitus, is this true?

Wondering if my symptoms are depression or worse.?
I have posted a better description of my condition on the forums in my reference below but here it is in a nutshell:

I just can’t get motivated much of the time. Basic tasks go undone. I find other things to do (or just do nothing).

This goes into all aspects of my life from basic things like cleaning up te apartment to major things that could actually be very beneficial to my financial situation.

There is also a physical symptom that worries me and may tie into the whole picture. I hear a constant hissing sound. Sometimes it is almost imperceptable and at other times it is quite loud. Kind of like tinnitus (spelling?) but not a ringing just a hiss.

Any ideas, or has anyone else had this type of experience?

    Reference: http://howto.netmorale.com/viewtopic.php?t=28

It could be depression. I just started getting treatment for depresseion about a month ago. I noticed that I wasn’t able to get motivated to do those same basic things, avoiding things, forgetting things, lack of sleep or sleeping all day…I haven’t had the hissing sound, which I’m sure is pretty annoying sometimes. Go to your doctor and talk to them about how you are feeling. They may prescribe drugs at that time or they may refer you to a psychiatrist before or just start you out on something until you can get into to see one. I had a hard time telling anyone about it, because I felt like a crazy person and even my friends might laugh at me. Since I talked to my doctor on started some meds, I feel a lot better and I am motivated from the moment I wake up. Good luck!

My ears ring too. I have found that keeping a clock that has a "tick" to it helps take your mind off of focusing on the ring so you can actually get some sleep.

I haven't had my "ringing" looked at by a doctor – so I really don't know what can be done about it. You are correct that it is called tinnitus. Here is a good website to take a look at. It may help with some of your questions:

Yes, it is called tinnitus. There is no known cure for it. Try sleeping with the radio on a low setting to help.

6 years ago, I was diagnosed with Meniere’s Disease, a chronic disease of the inner ear causing deafness, tinnitus and vertigo. If I had not eliminated salt from my diet, today I would be a VERY different person. Everybody needs 500 mg sodium in their daily diet to maintain good health, but most people consume far more salt than necessary, and certainly far more than is healthy. I run a low sodium recipe site called The Daily Dish and must argue against your description of low-sodium diets as “dangerous.” I fear you are suffering from extreme misinformation.

  14. Hello, I’ve had Tinnitus 15 years ago and it went away after 3 months. But recently it has returned. I went to hearing a specialist and he said there is a new device by Neuromonics that in clinical trials has had a 90% success rate in reducing Tinnitus. Patients listen to a walkman like device that plays music, the music is tuned to your specific Tinnitus sound. A doctor of Otolaryngology trained in Neuromonics device programs the music. After listening to this music for 6 months or so, your brain eventually learns to block out the Tinnitus sound. It sounds promising. But my doctor said this device costs money since it is relatively new in U.S. It’s orginally from Australia. Check website out, I hope this helps

    It is Tinnitus

This extremely irritating and stressful condition of the ear is usually not caused by any external noise. This auditory sensation, or ringing in the ears, as it is widely known affects thousands of people. It involves a ringing noise in the ears which may or may not be accompanied by hearing loss. Although many tinnitus sufferers can hear perfectly well, some others experience such loud ringing in the ears that other sounds are virtually blocked out. This severe condition renders them helpless as they loose sleep and concentration.

Tinnitus can be broadly classified into two types: Objective which is caused by vascular sounds in the head and neck or muscular contractions of the middle ear or the soft palate in the mouth. Your doctor can easily hear the same sounds on examination as you are yourself hearing.

Subjective tinnitus refers to buzzing, roaring, ringing or whistling in the ear which may be continuous or intermittent and are only heard by the sufferer, i.e. a doctor is unable to hear the same sounds. Subjective tinnitus is more common than objective tinnitus. Nearly 36 million Americans suffer from this disorder. In almost all cases, only the patient can hear the noise.

Valium, Xanax and Klonopin are benzodiazepine drugs that many doctors prescribe for tinnitus. These are conventional medications which achieve only limited success in tinnitus symptoms relief, and usually their bothersome side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation often discourage use.

Although they are helpful in reducing tinnitus symptoms and aid in sleeping, they are addicting to varying degrees and cannot be used continuously for a long period of time. Valium is the most addicting of these and is not used often for this reason.

Xanax is very popular and is prescribed often for tinnitus. However, the ATA report on medications that cause tinnitus lists Xanax as causing it in 6.6% of cases.

    Others include:

    - Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline
    - Migraine medications gabapentin (Neurontin) and acamprosate (Campral)
    - Baclofen (a muscle relaxant)

Additionally, ATA clearly states that there is no cure for Tinnitus with the conventional line of medicine.

There is actually no cure for tinnitus with the conventional medicine. Actually, since last many years, the onus has been on the herbal industry to provide relief, if any, to tinnitus sufferers.

Tinnitus is usually due to damage to the microscopic ends of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Perfect hearing is possible only if these nerves remain healthy and any damage to these nerves results in tinnitus or hearing impairment.

Some herbal remedies exist which can be used to support all body systems involved in helping the ear to perform its tasks of clear hearing and balance, as well as the circulatory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

Some of the most common herbs & biochemic tissue salts used are
    • Ginkgo Biloba is excellent for a number of cerebral and circulatory disorders. It is probably the most widely-used herb for tinnitus and many sufferers swear by this natural ingredient.
    • Rosemary dilates and strengthens blood vessels and is an excellent circulation tonic. Rosemary is particularly useful for tinnitus that is caused or worsened by high blood pressure and other circulatory conditions.
    • Avena Sativa is effective in reducing high cholesterol levels which can contribute to circulatory problems which cause tinnitus.
    • Wild Hyssop s also useful in reducing pain and inflammation.
    • Salicylic Ac. (30C) is indicated for tinnitus with loud roaring or ringing sounds, which may be accompanied by deafness or vertigo. This remedy is particularly useful in people whose symptoms began with a bout of flu, Meniere’s disease or long-term use of aspirin.
    • Ferrum phosphoricum (Ferrum phos. D6) is a homeopathic biochemic tissue salt which supports the absorption of iron in the body. The protective myelin sheath which surrounds all nerve tissue needs iron to supply this vital nutrient to the nerve cells it encases. Regular use of Ferrum phos. can help to prevent dizziness, headaches and restlessness and is of great benefit for those who tend to feel irritable, tense and tired.
    • Magnesium phosphate (Mag. phos. D6) well-known as a homeopathic painkiller, Mag. phos. is also of great benefit to the health of the nerves. It acts as a natural anti-spasmodic and a nerve and muscle relaxant and is also frequently recommended for stress headaches.

  37. I like the information you give here. My mother and her sibling all had hearing loss as they aged. I have some of the problem, but not as bad has hers. She was wearing two hearing aids by the time she hit 60. However I have found that by taking care of my ears and seeing doctors about the problem has helped me keep my hearing longer.
thanks again for the information. Losing your hears is not fun and very frustrating. I know it was for my mothers.
